The report and this article are worth reading.

Foot pain is a silent condition that affects many Americans, with as many as 81% of American adults saying they experience it at some point in their lives, and 47% of those saying it’s debilitating. This highlights just how widespread and impactful foot pain is on people’s daily lives and activities.

KURU surveyed over 3,000 Americans to do a deep dive into the state of foot pain in America in 2024.

See the State of Foot Pain 2024 report.

Key Findings:

  • Widespread Impact: A staggering 81% of American adults admit to experiencing foot pain at some point in their lives, shedding light on the pervasive nature of this often-overlooked issue.

  • Injury Triggers: Nearly half of those surveyed (47%) reported that their foot pain originated from an injury.

  • Diagnostic Gap: Only 37% of individuals with foot pain have been formally diagnosed by a doctor, indicating a significant diagnostic gap.

  • Uncommon Origins: 63% of respondents suffering from foot pain do not have a family history of such issues, challenging existing assumptions about the hereditary nature of foot pain.

  • Debilitating Impact: Almost half (47%) of the participants find their foot pain to be debilitating, underscoring the urgency of addressing this issue to enhance overall quality of life.

  • Consumer Mindset: A noteworthy 70% of respondents consciously purchase shoes with foot pain in mind, indicating a growing awareness and demand for footwear that prioritizes comfort and health.

KURU experts believe that these findings present a unique opportunity to gain valuable insights into a widespread but often neglected health concern: foot pain.

KURU asked Dr. Paul Kim, MD, of Golden State Orthopedics and Spine, why so many Americans may be fighting foot pain, and he says it all comes down to their footwear. He emphasizes the importance of the following features when selecting footwear to minimize foot pain and promote overall foot health:

  • Adequate Arch Support: Crucial for comfort and pain prevention.

  • Cushioning: Provides shock absorption, reducing impact during activities.

  • Comfortable Fit: Prevents discomfort and aggravation of foot conditions.

  • Room to Wiggle Toes: Prevents cramping and allows foot expansion.

  • Secure Fit to Prevent Sliding: Reduces blisters and friction injuries.

  • Solid Heel Cup: Enhances stability and minimizes heel movement.

KURU’s report also identifies the top 10 states where foot pain is most prevalent, along with insights into the careers and activities most affected by this issue. These findings provide valuable context for discussing health, wellness, and lifestyle choices.
