Welcome to the April Edition of the Chapter Chatter!

USA Dance, Inc. was originally formed 60 years ago as United States Amateur BallroomDancers Association, Inc., USABDA as an acronym. During the early years theorganization consisted primarily of a small number of members in the New York & D.C.areas, and small numbers on the West Coast. In the late 1970s, actions were initiatedto expand our organization to other parts of the country and to create a nationalorganization. In 1985 USABDA reorganized was granted tax-exempt status by theInternal Revenue Service. Bylaws were formed as a national organization with aregional and chapter structure.

In 2005, a corporate resolution was filed and recognized which changed our name toUSA Dance, Inc. We focus on promoting the growth of all styles of ballroom dance, both competitive and social dancing. This includes a program that creates and supportschapters in various states. In addition, we organize educational programs among thepublic about the health benefits of ballroom dance and Dancesport, the competitiveform of ballroom dancing. These programs emphasize the physical, mental and socialbenefits of dancing, and include the enhancement of dance.

Ballroom dance improves cardiovascular fitness, muscle strength, flexibility, andposture. Pivots, spirals, lunges, and chasses all contribute to muscle enhancement, calorie burning, and stamina. As the body develops, dancers are also sharing upbeatmusic and dance figures with friendly people which reduces stress and catalyzes theformation of new friendships. Recent studies have concluded that ballroom dance, aswell as other dance, music, etc. can help prevent the early onset of dementia inindividuals. Mind-to-body coordination, spatial relation, and floor-craft managementall improve cognitive ability.

In our organization, we are extremely fortunate to have a multitude of volunteers, board leaders, and dancers who love ballroom dance, appreciate the romance, and enjoy the health benefits that ballroom dance brings to their lives. We continue to focus our activities on various programs to enable members to have fun dancing, achieve their dance goals, maintain physical and cognitive well-being, and promote and expand the art, sport, and passion of ballroom dance.
