Latin Fever Lights Up the Dance Floor at Penguin City Brewery in Downtown Youngstown, Ohio.

Every Wednesday evening in May of 2025, the rhythmic pulse of Latin music filled Penguin City Brewery in Youngstown, Ohio, as USA Dance Chapter #2015 hosted their Latin Fever May Dance Mania. This event was free and open to the public, turning the brewery’s open space into a vibrant celebration of movement and culture. Dancers of all levels gathered to step, spin, and sway, creating an energetic atmosphere.

A different Latin dance style was featured each week, allowing attendees to enjoy a lively mix of Cha-Cha, Salsa, Rumba, and Bachata. The evenings began with a group lesson followed by an open dance party, which kept the energy high on the brewery’s concrete floor. Dancers from both local communities and visiting guests donned their dancing shoes, and some opted for sneakers, eager to pick up the tempo and fully immerse themselves in Latin dance.

On Bachata night held on May 21, 2025, rain kept many people away compared to the previous week. A highlight of the series was the Bachata night led by long-time instructor Sue Shardy. Known for her welcoming teaching style and expert guidance, Sue led dancers through the sensual rhythms of Bachata with ease and encouragement. She fostered a sense of community, skillfully guiding participants from basic steps to body movement, all while infusing the experience with laughter and connection. For some, it was their first time trying the dance, and they were completely hooked by the end of the evening.

We wanted to bring Latin flair to downtown Youngstown,” said a USA Dance 2015 organizer. “Penguin City Brewery gave us the perfect venue to make it fun, social, and community-focused.”

Couples danced under string lights, friends cheered each other on, and first-time participants found themselves swept into the rhythm. The brewery’s laid-back, industrial vibe made it easy for newcomers to join in, while seasoned dancers added flair with dips, turns, and fast footwork.

As music flowed into the evening air, one thing became clear: Latin Fever wasn’t just about the steps—it was about joy, camaraderie, expression, and sharing a bit of passion every Wednesday night in May 2025.

With smiles, Bachata, and just the right amount of sweat, May Dance Mania offered Youngstown a monthly celebration that no one wanted to end, even when pouring rain outside.
