American Dancer, the official online publication of USA Dance, was first published in 1979 as a newsletter, entitled Amateur Dancer.  In September/October 2006, under USA Dance President Esther Freeman, it was retitled American Dancer and became a hard-copy magazine.  Its first cover featured Latin Amateur couple Eugene Katsevman and Maria Matsanova.  

From 2006 to 2018, the magazine was printed bimonthly and later quarterly as a service to USA Dance members.  During those years, its leadership changed hands many times.  The original Executive Director of the Editorial Staff was Shawn Fisher, still a Professional Member of USA Dance today.  In 2012, Michael Mecham took over as Editor-in-Chief, and in 2014, Angela Prince, also still a Member of USA Dance, assumed the role of Publisher and Editor-in-Chief until 2018.

The magazine was briefly published as an online flipbook in 2019, but was then halted.  

In 2021, David Getchell resurrected American Dancer as an online blog, and a year later, handed over the Managing Editor reins to Rose-Ann Lynch.  As an online blog, American Dancer has received awards for publication excellence, including a top 25 world ranking of 14th from Feedspot in 2025.
