A Poem: The Oldest of the Current Ballroom Dances

Smiling

White satin shoes

Hair twisted up

Eyes shadowed, midnight mascara

Cheeks blushed, bronzed, highlighted

Bold berry red lips

Jeweled white silk gown

Gold pearl sparkling earrings

Swarovski necklace

Show arrival

Invitation to dance

Position

Facing partner, slightly offset to left

Lower bodies together upper bodies apart

Both looking to the left

Partners right hand below my left shoulder blade

My left hand is on his upper right arm

Begin

Strauss Blue Danube Melody

Loudness, softness

Violins, violas, cellos, double basses, harp, flutes, piccolo, oboes, clarinets

Bassoons, horns, trumpets, trombone, bass trombone, tuba

Timpani, bass drum, triangle, snare drum

Sound transcending time, space, history of pre-world I traditions

Speaks joy, excitement, history

“1,2,3.” 180 beats per minute

Continuous rapid turns in a ¾ time signature

Moving as a unit in close embrace

Turning to right, turning to left

Interspersed with non-rotating change steps

Switch between directions of rotation

Rotating on the spot the fleckerl

Heart beating

Swirl, whirl

Melody ends

Smiling

Bow

Audience applauds

Timeless dance appreciated
